Liposuction

There are various stages of getting a healthier and fitter body. After you have developed the resolve to get a leaner fitter figure, the next stage is of dieting, healthier eating and exercising. But most of us get stuck at the last hurdle, which refuses to go away, that is, stubborn fat. Stubborn fat can be explained as fat that is collected in specific areas of the body, which does not reduce despite the best possible efforts from our side. The most common locations for these pockets are over the chin, arms, upper and lower back, lower part of the belly or tummy, thighs, etc. This fat not only reduces the aesthetic appeal but also leads to extra skin folds, which lead to problems like irritation and redness over the skin and difficulty in fitting into clothes of our choice.

So what is the solution to this problem? Liposuction is the most effective and definitive method of removing. Liposuction (lipo + suction) is a technique of less invasive surgery where fat is sucked out from the layer deeper to the skin with an extremely small cut. It is a scarless method of removing fat and body contouring, which leads to a definite reduction in the volume of the area being treated.

What is the benefit of liposuction for fat removal compared to non-surgical fat reduction?

There are multiple techniques that promote the removal of stubborn fat without surgery, like HIFU, cryolipolysis, deoxycholate injections, CoolSculpt and many more. Their main appeal is the fact that they claim to be pain-free and have minimal downtime. Both these claims may be true to some extent, but it is important to understand that all these techniques are simply breaking up fat cells in the area where they are used. However, the fat molecules or triglycerides are not removed from the body and will ultimately get deposited somewhere else in the body (like the liver, around the internal organs called visceral fat or under the skin at another location). This means that though fat may appear reduced from the place where you got treatment but your body still has the same amount of fat.

The primary benefit of liposuction is the complete and definite removal of fat from the body. In this procedure, a plastic surgeon introduces a specialised instrument called as a cannula. Through these small openings, fat cells are first broken using techniques like basketting, vibration, laser or ultrasound/ vaser energy. The fat is then sucked out of the body using a specialised suction device. So at the end of the procedure, the extra unwanted fat is completely removed from the body. Another distinct benefit is that liposuction reduces fat in large amounts in a single sitting. Unlike other methods, which may require multiple sittings, take months for noticeable improvement and cannot quantify how much change in your figure is expected after the completion of the procedure.

What do plastic surgeons at Mirabilia plastic surgery recommend to achieve the best outcomes from your surgery?

Liposuction is a safe, tested and permanent technique where an experienced plastic surgeon can not only remove the fat but also provide a well-sculpted body. However, a strict discipline is required to maintain the results of the surgery. Here are some suggestions from our plastic surgeons:

• Ideally, patients should get the procedure if their weight is stable for a couple of months. In case of fluctuating weight, the results would not be the best.

• You should be on an optimal diet and exercise regimen before the surgery so that you can maintain the same routine after the procedure. This is extremely important because if your dietary intake is high after the procedure, then it will lead to repeated fat deposits in the body.

• Parameters like diabetes, hypertension and thyroid disorders need to be addressed before surgery to achieve the best results.

• It is advisable to stop smoking and alcohol intake, use of herbal medicines and green tea two weeks before the surgery to avoid any complications like delay in healing of wounds.

What is the safe limit for liposuction?

The rule of thumb is that during liposuction, you can safely remove 10% of your body weight without adding to the risk of any complications. For example, if your body weight is 75 kg, then 7.5 litres of fat can be removed safely. Removing more fat than this can be associated with problems like electrolyte and fluid imbalance, increased pain and long recovery periods. Hence, liposuction is not the method for reducing weight for people struggling with excess weight or obesity.

How much weight can be reduced by liposuction?

How much weight can be reduced by liposuction?

Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery. So let’s do some maths. If you are 75 kg, then we will remove 7.5 litres of your fat. Each litre of human fat is 400 gm weight grossly. So after the surgery, you’ll lose 3 kg of weight. But what needs to be understood is that you’ll achieve a significant reduction in your body dimensions. So an upper back liposuction will completely remove your bra rolls and reduce your bra band size, prevent the band from cutting into your skin, and allow you to wear deeper neck dresses without self-consciousness.

Similarly, liposuction over your tummy will reduce your pant size by at least 4 inches or even more. It’ll correct the looseness of skin, prevent redness and itching in skin creases and improve your confidence. Once you have undergone a liposuction procedure, it brings your body to its ideal size and with a disciplined lifestyle, you can maintain these results almost permanently.
